About This Place

Olley's Fish and Chips Experience stands as a beloved takeaway destination in London’s Herne Hill, delivering an authentic taste of classic British fish and chips with a modern, attentive touch. Nestled at 65 Norwood Rd, this fish and chips shop has carved out a remarkable reputation, and it’s easy to see why once you sample their perfectly cooked offerings.

At Olley’s, the culinary focus is unmistakable: premium, sustainably sourced fish paired with freshly prepared, golden chips. Whether you opt for the mild, flaky cod or the more flavourful haddock, every bite reveals a delicate balance of texture and taste. The batter is a highlight in itself — crisp, light, and cooked just right to seal in the moistness of the fish without any hint of greasiness. One reviewer, Himal Mandalia, raved about how fresh and firm the haddock was, praising not only the perfect batter but also the generous, homemade-tasting tartare sauce that accompanied it.

For those seeking variety, Olley’s goes beyond the traditional, offering hake, sea trout, rock/huss, and delightful sides like mushy peas, steamed broccoli, and coleslaw with a unique fennel twist. Their “Small Appetite” portion caters wonderfully to lighter appetites, presenting a modest serving of small cod with chips and mushy peas, showcasing the brand’s thoughtful menu inclusivity. Chef’s Specials such as the “Royal Feast” and “Fishcake Special” invite diners to explore a richer, more indulgent experience.

Olley’s also stands out in accommodating dietary needs, with gluten-free fish and chips options and gluten-free beer, ensuring no visitor is left out of this classic culinary joy. Their seafood platter and fried shrimp satiate those with a heart for variety, while comforting desserts like sticky toffee pudding with custard round off the meal with a sweet, nostalgic finish.

But what truly elevates Olley’s is the synergy between food and atmosphere — the friendly, personable staff who have been part of this community for years bring a welcoming warmth that’s echoed in the steady stream of loyal customers. Robin Leach’s 15-year patronage, praising both the freshness and quality of ingredients, and Nii Nii’s appreciation for their child-friendly menu and speedy service highlight the approachable yet stellar experience that this takeaway provides.

It’s clear that Olley’s Fish and Chips Experience isn’t just another fish and chips shop; it’s a cherished local institution that consistently delivers excellence. Josh Confrey’s glowing five-star endorsement, coupled with kind gestures from the owner himself, exemplify the care and pride infused in every aspect of this business.

For anyone craving a delicious, no-fuss meal that captures the essence of traditional British fish and chips without compromise, Olley’s offers not just satisfaction but a memorable experience that calls you back time and again.

Got a haddock and chips and it was one of the best I’ve ever had! Fresh, firm and flakey haddock. Crisp and flavourful batter, cooked at the perfect temperature and not greasy. Chips just perfect. Tartare sauce really popped and there was a lot of it, and seemed homemade. So good! Will be back!

Always fantastic fish and chips. Cooked fresh and great ingredients. Great staff and lots of choice. Been coming here for 15 years. Often voted one of the best places for fish and chips in the UK.

What a lovely fish and chips shop. The children loved the children’s meals. It was very speedy service and the chips were fresh the sausages were made from chicken. Reasonable sized portions for the little ones. Friendly and pleasant staff. Really popular fish and chips shop to go in this area I saw a lot of customers coming in during my takeaway order. Decent price, will return and will recommend.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Best Fish & Chips Experience! Without a doubt, Olley’s Fish & Chips in Herne Hill is by far the best fish & chips we’ve ever had. While carrying out some brickwork repairs behind the shop over a few weeks, we often had to ask Olley to move his car – and despite us being a bit of a nuisance, he was nothing but kind and accommodating. In fact, he even offered me and the team a free lunch from his shop – and what a meal it was! The food was absolutely outstanding – perfectly cooked, fresh, and delicious. The staff were just as impressive: polite, friendly, and clearly loyal to Olley, which says everything about the kind of person he is and the great team he leads. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food and left with full stomachs and big smiles. Thank you, Olley & team, for your generosity and hospitality. If you’re ever in or around Herne Hill, this is the place to eat – you won’t find better fish & chips anywhere!

Really friendly staff! So many gluten-free options, from fried king prawns, pea fritter, pie, to traditional fish and chips (with gluten-free vinegar). Dedicated gluten-free fryer too and served directly in the box, so celiac safe.

Fish was cooked to order. Chap behind thr counter was friendly. But pricy - but worth it as there's not many good chippies round here. Olley's was delicious.

All our fish was fried to order - not just sitting around like in a lot of other places - and it showed with very light and perfectly crispy batter. Chips were also very flavourful and tasty. We ordered one “Small Appetite” and a haddock and chips. The homemade tartare sauce was so so - too mayonnaise like for our taste - but everything else was delicious.
